Technology

Digital hearing aids use the most advanced technology available today. Working in a different way to analogue, they convert the signal from the microphone to numbers that can be manipulated by a tiny computer in the aid. They can automatically adjust to suit different sound environments. Digital instruments offer complete flexibility and fine tuning capabilities.

Analogue or conventional hearing aids have a microphone that picks up sound which is then amplified. They are the least expensive hearing aid, but don't offer the features of digital aids.

Types

BTE (Behind the Ear) hearing aids house the electronics in a case that fits behind the ear. The sound is directed to the ear canal through tubing and a custom made earmould. BTE hearing aids have a stronger amplifier and a larger battery.
ITE (In the Ear) hearing aids house the electronics in a case that fits inside the ear. They can be fitted with a telephone switch.

ITC (In the Canal) hearing aids are smaller than the ITE instruments and fit into the ear canal. They are used for mild to moderate hearing losses.

CIC (Completely in the Canal) is the smallest type of hearing aid, fitting far into the ear canal. They are custom made for people with mild hearing losses.
