Tinnitus is a treatable condition, and can be defined as the conscious experience of sounds that originate in the head, also known as "ringing in the ear". A possible cause of tinnitus is exposure to excessive noise. It can affect anybody, and may, or may not, be accompanied by a hearing loss.

Tinnitus FactTinnitus (ringing in the ears) is a common problem, affecting about 17% of the general population around the world.

Hyperacusis is a condition where suddenly everyday noises sound unbearable or painfully loud. Some patients also experience pain or pressure in the ear. Hyperacusis and tinnitus very often go hand in hand.

Audiological examination includes:

  • Complete case history including tinnitus, hyperacusis and overall health.

  • Investigation into whether vertigo or imbalance is present.

  • History of head trauma and any other illnesses or conditions.

  • History of medication use, past and present.

  • Any referable medical condition(s) identified will be noted and the appropriate advice given.
